An evening with LANGHORNE SLIM (USA)
Its a few years since we booked Pennsylvania's finest songsmith Langhorne Slim but weve have lots of requests" "when's he coming back" & here he is - solo & up front in person
Sometimes, truth can’t be explained. But it can be felt, running wild through a song. “I don’t want to tame myself. I want to be wild,” says Langhorne Slim. “If I can continue to refine the wildness but never suffocate or tame it, then I’m on the right path. Because it is a path. I feel it.”
The Spirit Moves is Langhorne’s newest artistic attempt to refine the wildness. The result is an effervescent collection of his now-signature, cinematic, joyful noise, rooted in folk, soul, and blues. The Spirit Moves is a stunning portrait of Langhorne’s life in transition: the “born to be in motion and follow the sun” rambler found a home in Nashville, Tennessee. While he’s put down roots in a place, he’s unattached to a person, single for the first time in recent memory. The Spirit Moves is also the first album of his career written and recorded entirely sober. Together, the record’s beautiful glimpses of bold beginnings and risks taken create an ode not only to a better life, but to the vulnerability needed to live it.
Recently Langhorne Slim was in Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studio to record a Luck Session:
We are excited to bring The Ska Vengers, a thoroughly unique 8-piece ska/rap/jazz/roots band from New Delhi back to Newcastle again. They are one of India's best known and most popular acts & really engaging live. ‘Energetic, almost eccentric and dramatic music’ – Indian Express
‘A true representation of the forward thinking artists that are bringing the spotlight over to the Indian music scene. Mesmerising and moreish, it is impossible not to find your limbs loosening while your body wills you to skank to the music’ – Wild City
A celebration of creative dissent wherein The Ska Vengers regaled the audience with a dose of quirky political reggae & rap’ – The Hindu
Thurs 14th Sept @ Cluny2 - £12.00
THE RAINBOW GIRLS (USA) + ELSA CROSS (USA)
Back to the UK after a 2-year gap, Rainbow Girls is a collaborative of songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, vocalists - California natives who've spent the last 4 years touring Europe and the US as a rock n' roll band, but who've recently returned to their folkier roots and embarking on a house concert tour across America.
This new trio version of the band (Erin Chapin, Caitlin Gowdey, & Vanessa May) highlights their rich harmonies, ageless songwriting, and soulful, bluesy sound at its rawest form.
The ladies came together at an underground open mic in Santa Barbara, CA in December of 2010 and spent the following summer busking and couch surfing around Europe. Since then they have released two studio albums and toured the US and Europe extensively
Elsa Cross is a young up & coming songwriter based in Austin Texas. She will have her fiddle player with her.
Elsa Cross turns her keen observations into heart-piercing Americana/roots-rock revealing the inner turmoil behind the outwardly badass troubadour."– Austin Music Minute, Kutx98.9
“Elsa Cross plays David Lynch’s kind of rockabilly.”– Austin American-Statesman

DANNY & THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD + William The Conqueror
Here come Jumpin Hot Club favorites Danny & The Champions Of The World touring again with what will be their career best album- "Brilliant Light". Writing themselves large, and taking the time to deliver an eighteen song magnum opus. Its a big big record of hit after hit stretching over two albums plus a further bonus set of instrumentals.
The two previous Champs collections Stay True (2013) and What Kind Of Love (2015) were critically acclaimed but Brilliant Light as their PR/Management/agency are prediciting puts them into the major league.
Earlier press- “If there’s a better country soul band in the UK, hats may have to be eaten” MOJO
“Danny & Champs make you sing along with a smile of shared pleasure and a nod of shared recognition of hurt. Like the best kind of southern country and soul.” SYDNEY MORNING HERALD “Danny Wilson is one of my favourite-ever songwriters… What Kind Of Love is the Champs’ most ebullient, charismatic set yet.”“utterly joyous, ageless, timeless and guileless. Nothing guilty here, only pleasure.”
STEVIE CHICK (MOJO / THE GUARDIAN)

LAURA CORTESE & THE DANCE CARDS (USA) + Helen MaCookerybook
Laura Cortese digs deep and aims high, grew up in San Francisco and moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music, immersing herself in the city's vibrant indie music scene and enjoying a busy touring-and-studio-sidekick career which included appearances with Band of Horses at Carnegie Hall and Pete Seeger at Newport Folk Festival.
But, it’s been with The Dance Cards that she has made the biggest impression in recent times. Served up with panache and zing, it’s bold and elegant fare, schooled in the lyrical rituals of folk music and backed by grooves that alternately inspire Cajun two-stepping and rock ‘n’ roll swagger. Bandmates Valerie Thompson, Jenna Moynihan and Jeni Magana bring their own multi-genre credentials to embellish the stylish mix. The most memorable gig of the past twelve months, they swung and rocked with constraint-free exuberance, tugging at and capturing the hearts of everyone.”David Innes R2 mag-
“Holy shitting hell – just watched Laura C and The Dance Cards who were phenomenal - even better then when I saw them in Shetland last year. So, so, so good!” May 17 review
Helen MaCookerybook ( from the original late 70's pop/countryjazz band The Chef's) who's played here with Martin Stephenson opens the show.

One of Texas premier songsmith's its always a real special occasion when Slaid comes to toon.
Slaid Cleaves takes the American experience and translates it into song. Framed by simple country folk arrangements, his songs paint a bleak landscape dotted with broken dreams and broken down cars. "... one of the finest singer-songwriters in Texas." - Neil Struass, The New York Time

Richard started playing the guitar at age 5 and has never looked back. Focusing early on with the fingerstyle guitar of Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, he began transcribing classical music, Jazz, the gypsy style of Django Reinhardt, bluegrass, ragtime and the blues to Sousa marches. Now a seasoned performer in his forties with thousands of performances worldwide to his credit, Richard has become renowned worldwide for his mastery of instrument and for his knock-out entertaining show. " If you like my playing, you should hear Richard Smith..the world champion! " Tommy Emmanuel

SHANNON McNALLY & Friends (USA) + Little Mo
From Long island USA - Shannon McNally became a performing singer/songwriter/guitarist in college and eventually signed with Capitol Records. After some time in Los Angeles, she moved to New Orleans soaking up that city’s music, culminating in her 2013 tribute album to singer/songwriter Bobby Charles, 'Small Town Talk' with an all-star band that included her producer Dr. John. Between albums she’d moved to North Mississippi as a Katrina refugee, and became part of legendary producer Jim Dickinson’s extended musical family.
What I eventually discovered in the small town of Holly Springs, Mississippi was this dark-eyed beauty who wrote grown-up songs, played a pretty mean Fender Stratocaster and, at times, sounded a lot Jesse Mae Hemphill. I hope music lovers around the world will come to know what I and many others already know: This girl belongs in the Americana Music spotlight. Rodney Crowell
"She has the voice: bruised, smoky and ornery, right at home where country and soul meet. She has the melodies and the timing - she’s irresistible.” The New York Times
Fri Oct 20th @ Little Theatre Gateshead £14.00
An Evening With WILLIE NILE (USA)
The Legendary rocker from New York City in a more mellow guise. Just him & guitar and piano. Playing songs. Telling stories
Today Austin Texas based Rock N Roller Jesse Dayton’s pedigree is not only impressive, but varied, to say the least. He played all of the lead guitar on Waylon Jennings record Right For The Time and on Ray Prices’ record Prisoner of Love. He’s also recorded with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Johnny Bush and played live with Kris Kristofferson. Dayton played the lead parts alongside his personal hero Glen Campbell, right after Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. His exploits are not solely within the country genre either, Dayton has jokingly declared onstage, “The Clash & X saved me from going to Foghat concerts!” So it’s not surprising that he ended up playing guitar on the Supersuckers biggest selling record Must’ve Been High, which frontman Eddie Spaghetti admits was directly influenced by Dayton himself. Dayton ended up producing and playing all of the guitars on Eddie’s solo record, The Value of Nothing and also appears on the new Supersuckers record Get The Hell. After touring with Mike Ness from Social Distortion, then playing with punk icon John Doe from the band X, (the two appeared on David Letterman), Dayton got the call to play guitar for X on the bands entire North American Tour.Jesse has just finished performing aboard the “The Outlaw Country Cruise” with Lucinda Williams, The Mavericks and Steve Earle. He's certainly done his time alright .
Jesse comes to a new venue with his full hometown band . The majority of the his new album The Revealer was recorded live. “You could feel the ghost of George Jones, Freddy Fender, Doug Sahm & Jerry Lee Lewis (who recorded there with producer Huey Meaux) !

VIN GORDON & The Real Rock Band + Esperanza + Ska'd For Life Dee Jay-Micky Pattison
The legendary Vin Gordon, aka 'Trommie', aka 'Don D Junior', is Jamaica's master trombonist, and played through the golden years of Jamaican music - through ska, rocksteady and on to working with some of the most iconic reggae artists in the world.
Vin's life in music started in the early 60s at the legendary Alpha Boys School of Music where he took up the trombone. Soon mastering his sound and earning a reputation as a player, he started recording at Coxone Dodd's Studio One in 1965 recording for The Wailers alongside great musicians such as The Skatalites' Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, Lloyd Brevett, Lester Sterling, Bobby Ellis and many more.
Vin's trombone sounds can be heard on the recordings of many Studio One legends of the day: the Wailers, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, the Abyssinians, the Heptones, Delroy Wilson, Bob Andy and Alton Ellis and plenty more, the list is staggering.
His biggest hits as a solo artist were 'Heavenless' (credited as 'Don D Junior') and 'Real Rock', which he composed alongside keyboard genius Jackie Mittoo, a forever popular massive reggae anthem, and possibly the most covered riddim in reggae history.
In 1977 his friend Bob Marley brought him to London (Vin was his favourite trombone player having played on the Natty Dread and Rastaman Vibration albums) to record the Exodus and Kaya albums, both million selling classic albums (including hits like ‘Is This Love’, ‘Satisfy My Soul’, ‘Exodus’). While in the UK he also worked with Aswad contributing greatly to their success at the time writing heavy horn based tunes such as 'Warrior Charge' and 'Dub Fire' (immortalised by Dennis Brown as 'Promised Land'). For the last twenty years Vin has toured the world as a member of The Wailers and the Skatalites and in more recent times he has led his own group, the Real Rock Band a fantastic 8 piece London based outfit.
As the years have passed we realize the huge contribution to reggae music Vin Gordon has made, from an unsung hero to an elder statesman.

THE STRAY BIRDS (USA) + Kari MaCleod
Originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, The Stray Birds started as a duo of acoustic buskers in early 2010 when Maya de Vitry and Oliver Craven met with their instruments, their voices, and their songs. It didn't take much convincing to get bassist Charlie Muench on board, and with the addition of a third unique and powerful voice, the group began to define its captivating sound. Since taking America by storm in 2013 they have gone on to win a huge fanbase following triumphant appearances at big festivals around the world such as Celtic Connections, Cambridge Folk Festival, MerleFest and Tønder. One of the outstanding successes of the Cambridge event in 2015, they were filmed for the Sky Arts TV coverage, presenter Mark Radcliffe telling viewers they were “one of the hits of the event,” and adding: “Everyone was talking about them - I know you’re gonna love them.” They continued to build their UK fanbase in 2016 with a tour of sold-out shows and ended the year on a high being voted Band of The Year in the annual Readers’ Poll at AmericanaUK where they also took the Album of The Year award too.
