The award winning Jumpin' Hot Club celebrates its 30th birthday next year. Founded in 1985 in the cellar of the Bridge Hotel, the club has now grown into one of the UK's leading promoters of roots music.
Over the years the club has played a key part in the cultural life of the north east. In the 1980's it founded Harambe Africa which grew to become one of Europe's largest festivals of African music and culture. The club also played a key role in the foundation of the Evolution Festival as well as programming stages at the Fish Quay Festival in North Shields. The club is famous for the Boss Sounds series and festivals and was awarded the Newcastle Journal Culture Award for the festival in 2006.
Over the past ten years the club has also worked extensively with refugees, developing a mentoring scheme to increase people's skills in arts promotion. Jumpin' Hot is also renowned for its open air stage at the Summertyne Americana Festival enjoyed by thousands every year by the banks of the Tyne.
The mainstay of the club remains the concerts which it promotes across Newcastle and Gateshead at the Cluny, Caedmon Hall, Live Theatre and Sage Gateshead.Over the years Jimmy Cliff, Scotty Moore, Sea Sick Steve, Richie Havens Prince Buster, Alejandro Escovedo, Gregory Isaacs, Odetta and Ramblin Jack Elliott have all played under the Hot Club banner.
